About this game
The Spectre Files is an explorable archive of the people, ideas and history of early communism, from the revolutions of 1848 to the Paris Commune of 1871 and the echoes that followed. It is compiled by a group of history enthusiasts: not an official or academic institution, and not affiliated with any party or government. THE PEOPLE IN THE FILES Each case is a true story told through the documents its people left behind: letters, diaries, newspaper clippings, police reports, court records, poems and telegrams. Meet a schoolteacher on the heights of Montmartre on 18 March 1871, a poet writing a song in hiding after the Commune fell, a mother keeping an exiled family alive in a London slum, a bookbinder who organised strikes, a bookseller who wrote a farewell letter to his wife before a firing squad in Vienna — and Marx and Engels as these people knew them. No background needed: every case opens with a short primer, and every idea is explained in plain words when the story needs it. RESTORE THE SCENE Every chapter is one frozen moment, painted as a Constructivist print: a Paris square at dawn, a barricade, a Manchester mill, a cramped room in Soho. Tap the people and objects in the scene to read what they carry and the documents they left behind, and collect the key words onto your clue board. Then think it through, page by page: who is each face, which rule were they living under, and what actually happened here? Fill in a whole page and the archive tells you only how close you are — never which blank is wrong. Stuck? The society's Old Archivist will nudge you, one blank at a time, and can point to the spot in the scene where the answer hides. Only when you have pieced it together does the full story unfold. Some pages are built on the original texts of Marx and Engels themselves. FOUR CASES, NINETEEN SCENES Open on the Paris Commune of 1871, then follow the trail back to 1848, to Marx and Engels in exile in London and the First International, and on to the song that outlived them all. Close a case to stamp it, earn certificates and rise from Probationary to Chief Archivist. Cases 1 and 2 are free; later cases can be unlocked one at a time or all at once. THE CHRONICLE A timeline from 1818 onwards, grouped by decade, to keep every scene in its place. THE WORKSHOP • Member Card: join the Spectre Files Society under a pseudonym, as revolutionaries once did, with one of eight Constructivist worker portraits (or your own photo), a number and a seal. • Certificates: earn a certificate at every promotion, for working through the classics and for every case you close, and share it. • Poster Workshop: turn any line into a Constructivist, woodcut or big-character poster and save it to Photos. • The Communards' Wall: lay a flower for the last Communards of May 1871. CAREFULLY SOURCED Every case lists its sources, and editor's notes separate historical facts from interpretation and debate. Spotted a mistake? Corrections are welcome. PRIVATE BY DESIGN No account. No tracking. Everything, including your card and progress, stays on your device. Built natively for iPhone with Dynamic Type, Dark Mode and VoiceOver support.
